Job Description

Fitness and Wellbeing Trainer

  • Arohata Prison – Tawa and Upper Hutt
  • Permanent position
  • Focus on women’s fitness and wellbeing

At the Department of Corrections our goal is to reduce re-offending, and underlying this is a strong commitment to public safety. Our people care about our communities and want to make New Zealand a safer place to be. We do this by helping people lead crime-free lives, which means fewer victims and safer communities.

We have an exciting new role for a Fitness and Wellbeing Trainer at Arohata Prison (Tawa), working with women to enhance their wellbeing through comprehensive fitness, health and wellbeing education programmes. This is a pivotal position to help influence positive changes in behaviour that come from improved health and wellness.

In this role you will plan, organise and deliver varied range of group fitness classes and sports activities for women who are a range of ages, fitness levels and abilities, including women with particular needs such as pregnant women or those with injuries. Providing support and advice around nutrition, healthy living, including living on a budget, you will be uniquely placed to influence women in a long term, constructive way.

To be successful in this position you will have knowledge of a wide range of sports and fitness techniques and sound experience planning and delivering classes and activities. Strong communication skills are paramount, with a core need to be able to verbally communicate in a respectful manner and the ability to command groups of women. We are looking for applicants who can demonstrate a successful track record in leading and motivating people to overcome obstacles and work positively with challenging situations and people.

Candidates require a Physical Education or other relevant qualification – and teaching or health sciences qualifications would be desirable. Current First Aid Certificate and a clean and current driver’s licence is also mandatory. Please note the role will be based between Arohata Prison and the women’s Upper Prison in Upper Hutt.
