Job Description

These are fixed term roles for four (4) months


We have vacancies for three seasonal rangers at Long Bay -Okura Marine Reserve, Cape Rodney -Okakari Point (Goat Island) Marine Reserve and North Head.  These marine reserves may host thousands of visitors throughout summer, and we are looking for Summer Rangers to support these busy summer months from December – March.


These Summer Rangers will primarily assist the Mainland Marine Ranger to undertake marine reserve advocacy, compliance, other marine biodiversity tasksand support the rec team with maintenance of visitor facilities on site.


For Summer Rangers, tasks will include:

  • Welcoming visitors and advocating marine reserves
  • Compliance monitoring – patrolling marine reserves to respond to any illegal activity and responding to outside reports of offending
  • Maintaining tracks and structures and amenity areas
  • Assisting in marine reserve social surveys to the public
  • Assisting with volunteers and visitors
  • Assisting the public when appropriate
  •  Coordinating and/or assisting with biodiversity monitoring


We are looking for one Summer Ranger for each of these two marine reserves and one general Marine Summer Ranger to support the permanent marine ranger and work across Auckland’s five marine reserves.


The successful candidates will have sound practical skills and be good at working with the public in a variety of situations. This includes ability to keep a professional manner in difficult compliance situations.

Summer rangers are expected to work weekends and public holidays throughout the summer months.


Basic rental accommodation is available at Long Bay and Goat Island while staff are working at the reserves. The Marine Summer Ranger is based at North Head and will need to find their own local accommodation.

A full drivers’ licence is a requirement, and current first aid certificate would be an advantage.


The successful applicant will have:

  • Experience in compliance and enforcement
  • Small boat skills and preferably an existing COC
  • Experience dealing with conflict or difficult interpersonal situations
  • Excellent people skills and a positive disposition
  • Some knowledge of the marine environment and marine reserves
  • A current full driver’s licence.
  • The ability to work by yourself.
  • Computer and reporting skills


The term of employment will be from December 2018 until March 2019 (four months).

Eligibility to work in New Zealand is mandatory, including a valid work visa covering the whole period of employment if applying internationally.
